If you have a Kindle Unlimited subscription, you have access to millions of book titles that you can read for free. But let’s face it: you have no idea what their content is, and you don’t know if they’re any good.
But you can depend on Rated Reads for help. Here’s yet another list of books we’ve reviewed on Rated Reads that we’ve enjoyed AND that are all rated mild or none. I’ve had to update this post because three of the books previously listed as free no longer are. I probably won’t be always coming back and adjusting, so just know this is subject to change.
- Life As We Knew It, by Susan Beth Pfeffer. In this young adult dystopian book, a family struggles to survive after a meteor knocks the moon out of orbit. “It’s excellent on many levels: as a straightforward catastrophe story; as a coming-of-age story of a girl who has to shoulder things she never thought she would have to; but, ultimately, as a portrait of a family learning to work together,” Melissa wrote. Rated mild.
- Dispirited, by Luisa M. Perkins. In this young adult paranormal book, Perkins “takes a few basics of ghost stories and turns them on their head to create a fast-paced, fascinating, magical read,” Teri said. Rated mild.
- The Winter Witch, by Paula Brackston. This historical fiction book does feature witches; Teri says Brackston is her “favorite witch writer” and the novel is “a lovely story of a heroine you can’t help but cheer for.” Rated mild.
- Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore, by Robin Sloan. This novel features fantasy and mystery. A young man in search of a job wanders in to a bookstore “on a whim and finds himself not only employed, but immersed in an increasingly strange world,” Melissa wrote. Rated mild.
- Just the Way You Are, by Beth Moran. This fiction romance book features a woman who has gotten stuck in life. She had a list for all the things she wanted to do one day as part of a couple but now she’s decided to tackle the list herself. It’s a charming story. Rated mild.
- My Double Life, by Janette Rallison. In this young adult romance book, a teen living a quiet life ends up being a double for a superstar. Melissa wrote, “Yes, it’s fluff, it’s well-written, enjoyable, fun fluff.” Rated none.
- The Graveyard Book, by Neil Gaiman. This story is a multi-award-winning modern classic. And now you can read it for free. Just do it. Rated mild.
- On Little Wings, by Regina Sirois. A young woman goes on a quest to find long-lost family in this young adult book. Teri says the book has “rich, spirited writing, gorgeous settings, strong families, journeys of self-discovery and the beauty of first love.” Rated none.
- For What It’s Worth, by Karey White. This women’s fiction book of romance follows a cake shop owner who asks clients to pay what they think her products are worth. Teri said, “It’s a great pleasure read — sit down and get lost in the charming world of wedding cakes and love.” Rated none.
- My Fair Godmother, by Janette Rallison. This young adult book mixes a number of elements and is fun for pretty much any age. Rated none.
