Kate flees her abusive boyfriend in London and makes a new home in a little cottage that she inherited from her great-aunt. Kate didn’t know her aunt well, but she hears strange whisperings about her and about the old cottage.

During World War II, Violet is a 16-year-old who has been isolated on her family’s grand estate. Her mother died when she was very young and is never talked about. She just hears a few little things here and there, that she was mentally unhinged.

In 1619, Altha is on trial for witchcraft. A local farmer was stampeded to death by his cows, and she was seen nearby at the time. She and her mother, who died a few years before, are known for providing natural remedies for ailments.

The three women are connected, and the book shifts among their stories. As the plot progresses, their connections (and the similarities in their experiences, even separated by centuries) become clearer. Weyward is a book about the power of women and the ways others, particularly men, fear them and seek to control them. It’s a testament to female strength through trials and the power that comes from connection to the natural world.

I was caught up in these women’s stories and hoping for the best possible outcomes for each of them.
