The entries in this volume of Emma M. Lion’s journal cover January and February 1884, picking up from Volume 5.

The absolute biggest news of the story is that she turns 21 and gains her majority in January. This has been a date she’s looked forward to for years, but particularly in these unselected journals we’ve been privy to up until now. She’s officially able to take charge of her home and finances and is less under the thumb of Aunt Eugenia. Though, of course, that being said, she still isn’t exactly free of her, for one, and she has promised to help her cousin Arabella during this Very Important Season. (Remember, Arabella WILL get engaged this year… to someone.)

A few highlights of this volume: Pierce must prove to the Whereabouts Lane committee that he is loyal to the neighborhood; Emma hosts her friend Mary and the professor whose work she types/edits; Emma starts a job, on a trial basis. Of course, all are sources of great entertainment and mirth — at least for readers.

And one very significant thing occurs, but I could never spoil the story.

This ending had me gobsmacked. I immediately picked up Volume 7.

Rated: Mild. Profanity includes a couple of uses of moderate profanity, occasional mild language and probably 5 or more uses of British (bl-) profanity. Emma faces an unwelcome physical advance. (And spoiler… kissing occurs, but I do have to include this as content info, mild as it is.)
