The entries in this volume of Emma M. Lion’s journal cover November and December, picking up from Volume 4.
In this period of time, she shares the St. Crispian’s observation of Guy Fawkes Day, which involves the vicar, in this case, of course, Hawkes. I have to say I feel bad for him and how he essentially has to hide out very cleverly for a day. Like so much else in St. Crispian’s, the tradition is pretty nuts, but entertainingly so.
On the topic of things that are unique to St. Crispian’s, Emma decides she’s had enough of just hoping to see the Roman. She decides to make a full investigation and map where he has been seen, requesting input from fellow neighborhood residents.
Meanwhile, Emma is trying to figure out how she can earn some money to stay solvent in the long run. The ideas flow freely, but … are any of them actually doable? Guess.
In Volume 5, she pays back fully her favors to Jack: the favor is so large that he ends up owing her afterward.
And her very satisfying group of Hawkes, Islington, and Pierce spend more time together, gathering in particular for Christmas. It’s a pleasure to be along with them as they chat and become better friends.
I now accept that I’m burning through Emma M. Lion’s journals quickly and am feeling a bit sad that there are only 8 at the moment.
