A baby’s body is found in a creek near a university and the small, affluent community of Ridgedale, New Jersey, is full of opinions. There’s the usual outrage and judgment that bad parenting is to blame; there are some who feel compassion for the unknown mother. The woman who ends up covering the story for the town’s newspaper is herself still recovering from a crippling depression after losing her own baby, but she determinedly tries to cover all the bases to figure out what happened.
In the novel, Molly’s point of view is predominant, but the story hops around among a few characters’ perspectives. There’s a teen girl who lives with a mother who does very little to take care of her, and a perfectionist mom who controls the lives of her bright teen daughter and kindergartener son. Add in a police chief, a newspaper editor, a drama-queen best friend, and others who all have secrets to hide, and the book is a highly combustible mix threatening to explode at any time.
Where They Found Her is an entertaining mystery filled with twists and turns and fairly over-the-top characters. I didn’t really read it for characterization, but more for watching all the pieces come together.
Rated: High.There are a solid three dozen or more uses of strong language, references to rape, and some moderate detail about some sexual situations.
