When Benson Fisher gets a scholarship to Maxfield Academy, he just knows his life is about to turn around for the better. After bouncing from foster home to foster home, he is beyond ready for a steady life at a new school. Benson arrives at the school to find that it isn’t quite what he expected. There are cameras everywhere, student gangs, dangerous outdoor sports and, not to mention, NO ADULTS. The only guidance the adults have left them is four rules. Once you break a rule, you get detention, but even detention isn’t quite what it seems. The longer Benson is there, the more he wants to get out. But that’s just it: once you enter, there is no escaping.

Variant is a gripping story. Once you start it, there really is no putting it down. With the crazy outdoor games, student teachers, silly school crushes and intense punishments, this book is definitely exciting. However, as exciting as it is, there is also a lot of violence.

Rated: Moderate, for lots of violence and some language.
