I cannot express how many people I’ve seen recommend these Emma M. Lion books online. How many have absolutely gushed over them. How many have urged all of the rest of us (any still remaining who have not tried them yet) to just get started.

So finally, I did. Okay, okay.

Luckily, when I posted on Instagram that I was going to read this first book in the series, several other bookstagrammers told me that this one wouldn’t leave me in raptures. I needed to know it’s just a start and not overwhelmingly great. I wouldn’t be in raptures just yet. I’m glad I got that information because I really would be wondering what the hoopla is all about. But since I know, I can see how this foundation will grow into a world of witticism and wry observations about all kinds of characters.

In short, Emma M. Lion is a young lady who has just moved to London, where she spends some time each year, more permanently. Her father and mother are both dead, and she is to inherit the house her father owned in the city, and any money attached to it, when she turns 21. For many years, however, the widower of the woman who owned it previously has been graciously allowed to stay living in it. And he is Emma’s nemesis. As she moves into the house this time, however, “cousin Archibald” is aware that she will be inheriting it from him very soon. And she finds out that the money attached to it has dwindled to almost nothing under his oversight. Emma has to take charge and start figuring out how to turn her future around.

In this short book, we learn about a number of other characters who will inevitably be the entertainment we will appreciate in the rest of the series. For now, a foundation has been laid and some dramatis personae introduced. I give it 3.5 stars out of 5 and expect others in the future will leave me also highly recommending these “selected journals.”
