A beautiful new retreat, designed to blend in to its natural surroundings, has just opened on an English island. But locals know the island as Reaper’s Rock, for a land formation that looks like the Grim Reaper. And its history has lived up to the name: a number of murders have taken place there in the past.
Detective Elin Warner is brought in when a woman is found dead on the rocks below the retreat’s yoga pavilion. It could be an accident, but the woman wasn’t supposed to even be there.
Then a guest drowns while diving, and it looks like the island’s “curse” is catching up with the retreat. Elin has to figure out who is targeting these guests, and why, before more deaths occur.
The Retreat is a page-turning suspense book. Readers get pieces of the back story of the island, as well as bits of Elin’s recent life. I didn’t realize while reading that this was a second book featuring the detective, but it didn’t make a difference to my understanding of this one. I have The Sanatorium on hold at the library, so when I read that, I’ll get more info!
