Ariadne Hui is focused on success, and so far her hard work has gotten her where she planned. She works at a top law firm in Toronto, and she’s aiming to make partner. All of her life is focused on that goal.

One problem: it’s her father’s dream. But it hasn’t been a big enough problem for her to change her plans. Because what else is she going to do with her life and time?

It all gets shaken up when she comes home one night to find a strange (but hot) man lying on her couch. Turns out, it’s her best friend and roommate’s cousin. While Hana is out of town on a business trip, she’s told Jihoon he can stay there. And he really won’t be a problem, Hana assures Ari. He’s just quietly moping around fresh off a breakup.

Ari largely goes about her business when she’s at home. But Jihoon is so nice, so gentlemanly, so generous and good, she ends up falling for him. And that is not helping her focus or her career goals.

Just when she starts coming around to the idea of liking him, a huge surprise rocks Ari’s world. Turns out, Jihoon is an international pop star. And their relationship is, frankly, not really workable for either of them. But could they, maybe, make it work?

The Comeback is a cute romance novel. The back-and-forth between Ariadne and her friend Hana, between Ari and Jihoon: all of it is smart and sharp and fun. There’s plenty to swoon over. There’s also plenty on the serious side: Ari has been making herself follow her father’s dream, but the shakeup of her romantic life leads to some serious self-examination. It’s satisfying to go along for the ride as she creates a life she can enjoy and feel is truly hers. Only downside is some profanity.

Rated: High. Profanity includes 12 uses of strong language, about 30 instances of moderate profanity, 40 uses of mild language, and 35 instances of the name of Deity in vain. Sexual content includes kissing and intense making out but sex scenes are pretty much all left understood and “offscreen.” A number of references to male pop star group being hot and showing abs or being shirtless, etc.
