Lady Hollis Brite has grown up at Keresken Castle, vying for the king’s attention alongside other daughters of the nobility. It seems King Jameson regularly has a new girl to display on his arm. His latest fascination is Hollis herself. She’s held his attention longer than some girls, so when Jameson declares his love for Hollis, she’s shocked yet thrilled. Capturing the heart of a king is a dream come true — especially for someone of the lesser nobility.

However, when she meets a commoner who seems to possess the power to see right into her heart, she realizes that the future she wants may not be the one she always imagined. Truth is, falling in love with a king and being crowned queen isn’t the happily ever after she thought it would be.

Despite stumbling across countless negative reviews, I decided to give The Betrothed a chance. Perhaps it was because of these lowered expectations, but the book was better than I expected.

The Betrothed features a simple writing style with shallow characters that feel more like cardboard cutouts at times. However, it is also a simple, fast read that lacks complexity, making it the perfect story to binge.

Rated: Mild. Hollis kisses a man who is not her betrothed. At a wedding, the wedding party and guests are brutally massacred. There is little graphic detail, and even the characters’ grief after the event feels unrealistically toned down.
