Once, Calywn was the most talented of all the chanters of Tremaris, and she’d fought hard to become the chanter leader. But when an accident renders her magic silent, Calwyn finds that her whole life and the future she had planned with Darrow has somehow slipped away. Feeling empty and powerless, all she wants is to return to the one place she still considers home — Antaris. But life behind the Wall with the priestesses has drastically changed, and even with her powers gone, Calwyn cannot ignore the rising danger that threatens everything she holds dear.

A sickness has attacked the chanters of Tremaris, a sickness that also seems to have infected the land itself. Calwyn may be just an ordinary girl now with no magic left in her, but she cannot sit by and watch the world, and those she loves, die.

The Tenth Power is easily the darkest of The Chanters of Tremaris trilogy, which began with The Singer of All Songs and continued with The Waterless Sea. It has higher stakes and characters who have aged and matured. However, the story continues to follow the simple adventure formula, making it feel like a lighter tale still, full of hope, that younger teens would enjoy. And while cliche story points may seem transparent to some readers, there is still a driving sense of time-sensitive danger that makes this series finale easy to binge.

Rated: Mild, for peril and threat of death. One country attempts to please its deity with human sacrifices. A drug is used to aid in a captive’s suicide. Characters kiss.
