Summer is starting, and Ali is facing not just her kids being out of school, but the year anniversary of her husband telling her he wanted to leave their marriage, as well as the two-year anniversary of her mother’s death. And now her husband is saying it’s time to get the divorce done. Meanwhile, she’s a sometime-bookkeeper and professional organizer, and her own house is in need of some organizing.

Her best friend is telling her to get out a bit and wear some “hard pants.” She manages to put some overalls on and takes her dog for a walk at the dog park, where he promptly pees on a man. Rather than being angry, the handsome man smiles at her like he is interested. In her. As an attractive, interesting woman.

They go on a date, a good one, and Ali tells herself she doesn’t need more complications in her life, but she could have a light summer romance, right?

Naturally, it doesn’t end up quite as simple as she plans. But it could even be better than she expects, if she can let it.

Summer Romance is a story about a woman who has lost parts of herself and is getting the opportunity to find them again. She’s lost her mother, as well, so she’s grieving the death of the woman who raised her and brought a lot of joy and support to her life. The story is definitely a romance as billed, and it’s sweet and shippable. Ethan is a good guy who shows up for Ali and sees who she is, and loves her for it. They’re cute together and the chemistry sizzles off the page. What’s even better is that it’s “hot” without being too steamy.

In addition to being a romance, Summer Romance explores the experience of being a mom and finding yourself even as you can easily get lost in parenting life. I love how Ali interacts with the good people in her life, how she is a good mom to her three kids and still learning how to be what they need as they grow. The parenting part: very relatable. All in all, a delightful book.

Rated: Mild. Profanity includes a few instances of moderate profanity, a few uses of mild language, and 25 instances of the name of Deity in vain. Sexual content includes some mild references to sex, kissing scenes, and “closed-door” sex. Only detail is some removal of clothing.
