Callie has been living on the run as a squatter with her little brother and a friend, Michael, since the end of the spore wars that wiped out all people from ages 20 to 60, including her parents (the young and old were given a vaccine so were spared). The elderly, or Enders, are in control of society, and young people have no rights or abilities to work or take care of themselves legally unless they have living grandparents who have claimed them.
When she hears about a company that “rents out” bodies of teenagers to Enders willing to pay a small fortune to be young again for a week or a month at a time, Callie feels it might be the only way to get the money she needs to properly take care of her brother. She is assured that the procedure will be perfectly safe and that she’ll simply be asleep for a little while and then wake up and have the money promised her.
Naturally, things get complicated, and she ends up in the middle of a dangerous situation. Should she protect herself and take care of her brother, or should she try to help protect all the other Starters?
The book has a great premise and the plot develops well, with plenty of action and suspense and some good surprises toward the end. I really enjoyed it. My only small complaint is that the writing was kind of basic. But I doubt many readers, especially teens, would share my small disappointment. Even better, it’s a good clean book. I’m eagerly looking forward to the sequel.
Rated: Mild. There is no language, and only a mild kissing scene, and some mild violence.
