As the youngest of four daughters, Primrose Ainsworth is eager to turn 16. She’ll finally have the chance to enter society, attend balls and join her family for forays to the theatre instead of being left home alone like a child.

But when her parents decide to delay her debut into English society, Prim decides to go rogue for one night. After all, even if her family isn’t celebrating her 16th birthday, that doesn’t mean she can’t.

It’s a daring plan — a scandalous plan — but, alongside her best friend, Prim dons a mask and escapes to the infamous Vauxhall Gardens. The night doesn’t go as planned, though, when Prim finds herself separated from her friend by an unexpected tavern brawl. With the help of a mysterious gentleman, Prim sets out to find her friend before their subterfuge can be discovered. But there is more to Jacob than there seems. As the night drags on, Prim finds an unexpected partner in mischief and a romance she never expected.

Sixteen Scandals is a whirlwind adventure that mainly takes place over Prim’s night of freedom. It’s so short, in fact, that it doesn’t even seem like a novel; at times, it feels repetitive solely so the novel can reach a certain word count.

Obviously it has its flaws. It’s not a deep story and insta-love is prevalent. I still enjoyed reading it, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing overall.

Rated: Mild. There is no language. Blood is mentioned once, when Prim witnesses the beginning of an animal fight where dogs turn on their handlers. She leaves before the fight can truly begin. Sexual content includes some descriptive kissing scenes. Prim hears, and sometimes glimpses, couples making out in alleys and behind bushes.
