Starting a week before the Selection, The Prince offers readers the chance to follow Maxon through the first few days of the competition. Once, before America came along, there was another girl in the Prince’s life and another path he wished he could have followed.

Meanwhile, The Guard picks up in the middle of The Elite, book two of the Selection series, showing things from the perspective of Aspen. As Aspen struggles to guard America from the dangers that come with being a part of the Elite, he finds himself still hoping to win her heart even as he wonders if either of them will survive the rising rebel threats.

While I didn’t find these two stories to be anything exceptional, both novellas were fast-paced and perfect for fans of the Selection series. They offer good insights into these familiar characters, and it was fun to relive the days of the Selection through differing points of view.

Rated: Mild, for around 14 uses of mild language all together.
