Desi Bascomb is a pretty typical eighth-grader: she isn’t one of the popular kids; she has a crush on a cute boy who hasn’t paid much attention to her since they played online Boggle together in fourth grade and … she works at a pet store inside a groundhog costume. When her former best friend and current in-girl Celeste humiliates her in front of said cute boy, Desi wishes (on a supposedly magical fish) that she could have … impact. And she gets it. She finds out from a sort of fairy-godmother-on-steroids that she has MP, magic potential, and, with it, is able to work as a substitute for princesses around the globe who want some time off.
Sounds perfect. Impact? Oh yeah. Desi is most definitely in. But she doesn’t get to jump right in to the great high-profile subbing; first she has to get trained and do some practice runs as low-level princesses, and the glamorous gig doesn’t seem quite as amazing as it might be cracked up to be. Nor is it as simple as it may sound. In fact, Desi has a bit of a hard time just behaving exactly as the princesses themselves would behave; she can’t resist trying to make things, well, better for them when they get back. But the higher-ups in the subbing agency aren’t thrilled with her idea of making a difference. Will Desi get through her subbing gigs with her MP and new job intact? Will she get to have an impact?
Princess for Hire is a fun little book for any girl who has dreamed of being a princess. It’s perfectly delightful.
Rated: None. There is no language or sexual situations, although one of the princesses is a native in a South American tribe that doesn’t wear much in the way of clothing.
