Carol has secured herself a very nice apartment at an upscale retirement home. She is eager to enjoy all its creature comforts at her advanced age — and after 35 years of being without pretty much any comforts. Because her last residence was prison, where she paid her debt to society for being a serial killer.
Carol’s just hoping to make some friends and take up some new hobbies that don’t involve anyone keeling over. But not long after she’s settled in, a former detective realizes who she is and spreads the word. And that makes her simple goals a lot harder to achieve. She’s dismayed but not entirely surprised.
But it gets much worse when another resident of the community is murdered. And Carol knows that she isn’t the killer. That means someone ELSE in the retirement home is. Since she’s an obvious suspect, she’s going to have to figure out the true culprit so she doesn’t end up back in prison.
I’m Not the Only Murderer in My Retirement Home is pretty entertaining. It follows the formula you’d expect and delivers some humor and light amateur (she basically is an amateur, on this side of the crime…) sleuthing. I think my only quibble was there are a few spots where her past seems a bit alarming — just too dark for the light book it is overall. I did think the end was perfect, though.
Rated: High. Profanity includes 13 uses of strong language, around 30 instances of moderate profanity, 11 uses of British profanity, and 20 instances of the name of Deity in vain. Sexual content includes some kissing, a brief and not-detailed scene in which the older characters are mostly described as having athletic sex, and mentions of nakedness. There are some discussions of private parts. Violence includes a couple of murders in the present day, with some detail of injuries but nothing particularly gory. The primary character (a past serial killer) remembers some details of past crimes and fantasizes about committing current ones. Most are not detailed at all, though a couple of spots are slightly disturbing.
