Mary loves the so-called prince of Charles Town, except he doesn’t love her back. As a mermaid, being heartbroken usually means turning into sea-foam. Instead, Mary is unexpectedly pulled out of the sea onto the deck of a pirate ship, where she finds herself inexplicably in love again — not with a person this time, but with the pirate life.

Being a common pirate isn’t enough, though. Mary is determined to become a captain. When Blackbeard dies suddenly, she may just have found her chance to claim the title of pirate royalty — so long as she doesn’t let Blackbeard’s cute son or her best friend from back under the sea distract her from her new goal. Because girls can be pirates too, and Mary is determined to prove her salt.

My Salty Mary reads like a sitcom: something that can’t be taken seriously, but that promises you’ll have fun. It takes The Little Mermaid fairy tale and crosses it with the historical figure of Mary Read. It’s full of action, pirates, a dash of history, mermaids, kick-butt women, and a heavy hand of devil-may-care attitude. Overall, there’s certainly not much depth to the plot, but it is a good option for anyone looking for a light adventure to binge on a sick day or a long road trip.

(You can read our reviews of other “Mary” stories, My Contrary Mary and My Imaginary Mary, as well as “Jane” tales, My Lady Jane, My Plain Jane, and My Calamity Jane, from the “Lady Janies.”)

Rated: Mild. Includes 10 uses of mild language. A magical transformation leaves a boy pantless. Characters kiss.
