Anna Appleby is just emerging from a divorce. In her later 30s, she has two kids and bills to pay, and she’s definitely not looking for love. But the magazine she writes for is undergoing some changes and she’s having to prove she can keep up with the times by changing the tone of her column. On top of that, a young, handsome writer at the magazine is angling for said column and working hard to show his value to management.
After a few disastrous dates lined up through apps, she decides online isn’t her thing. She ends up agreeing to a plan to go on seven dates her daughter and son choose for her. Her rival will write a complementary column about dates that line up a bit with hers.
Some dates are painful; some yield new friends. Love? Not so much. But as Anna sticks to the plan so she can keep her job, she ends up finding a strong connection that surprises her and has her questioning if she can overcome her preconceived ideas and take a leap.
I’ve really enjoyed Sophie Cousens’ previous romances (probably my favorite was Just Haven’t Met You Yet), so I was eager to read this new one. I was a bit unsure how well I was liking it early on, but then it got going and sure enough I was hooked. I really felt for Anna and empathized with her hesitations and reluctance to “get out there” after her divorce. And her job? Phew—I’m a journalist as well and was just surprised she still had a local writing gig that paid the bills. But… then it was threatening not to. And there it was.
Is She Really Going Out with Him? delivers more of the chemistry and charm Cousens does well.
Rated: High. Profanity includes 11 uses of strong language, around 20 instances of moderate profanity, about 10 uses of mild language, and about 25 instances of the name of Deity in vain. Sexual content includes some scenes that have some brief “introductory” detail but then go to closed-door, as well as talk about it. I’d say the sexual content in Cousens’ books is moderate; just gives a bit of “spice” for those who like that without having long scenes.
