Octavia Zarola and her small crew have been tight-knit since their time fighting in the war between the human federation and the aliens known as Valoffs. Their bounty hunting work just keeps them fed and her ship mostly running. When Tavi gets an offer of work from a ruthless former Valovian general, she’d really rather tell him where to stick it. But Torran Fletcher’s offer includes an incredibly high payday, and her ship really needs maintenance.

To make the whole thing even worse, the job not only includes going to the Valovian planet, but for Torran’s own crew to join Tavi’s for the duration. But Tavi sets down some ground rules with Torran and the other Valoffs, and off they go.

After a while in close quarters, the groups start to get along. And Tavi finds herself attracted, strongly so, to the handsome Valovian leader. The getting-along part is fine, but the attraction is not helpful, so Tavi does all she can to ignore it. It looks like they can get the job done and earn the much-needed money.

But after they get started, the group discovers disturbing information that could mean they’re not just doing a recovery job but could be in the middle of a plot that could threaten the delicate peace between the two civilizations. And as much as Tavi has come to trust Torran, she’s not sure how to move forward when it means a choice between her own race and an alien she’s only known a short time.

Hunt the Stars is a compelling story that hit lots of sweet spots for me: space, aliens, some mystery and tension, and romance. I’d had it on my to-read list for a while, so when I got a bit tired of reading contemporary fiction without magic, fantasy, or sci-fi, I gave it a shot. I’d say while I do like some romance served up in my stories, even space tales, this one was heavily weighted toward the romance. It was almost an even split between sci-fi adventure and steamy romance. I’d have liked a bit less emphasis on the romance part (and the several steamy scenes). Overall, though, I enjoyed it a lot.

Rated: High. Profanity includes 27 uses of strong language, around 50 instances of moderate profanity, and about 25 uses of mild language. Sexual content includes references to sex, kissing, and a few detailed erotic scenes. Violence includes a good amount of killing and injuries through various types of combat and weapons.
