Every girl from Garter County is banished to an island during their 16th year to rid themselves of the powers they possess. The power, believed to be an aphrodisiac in the skin, is strongest when a young woman is nearing the threshold between girlhood and womanhood. Their powers are so strong they can lure grown men away, stealing them from their wives. Many mysteries lurk in the woods, and not all who leave for the grace year will return alive. If you survive, you will return pure. Considered to be lucky are the girls vowed to a man, for if they endure they will have a husband and a life of comfort waiting for them.

Tierney James, a rebellious girl who dreams of a better life and future for all women, does not want to be married. Tierney must survive the merciless grace-year girls, the brutal elements, and what lies waiting in the woods. Is there anyone she can trust? If she survives the grace year, can she tolerate a life in Garter County?

I haven’t read a book this good in quite some time. The Grace Year is more than just a survival story. It is a story about risking everything for freedom even if it means you won’t get to witness it. There are twists until the very end. It is a chilling read I wish I could forget and experience like the first time again.

Rated: Mild for violence and insinuation of sex, but no details.
