In this riveting conclusion to the Elements of Cadence duology, the fate of the Isle of Cadence hangs precariously in the balance. Bane, the spirit of the North Wind, seeks to assert his dominion over all the spirits, and the only way to defeat him extracts a harrowing price.

A Fire Endless unfurls its gripping narrative across both the West and the East, seamlessly entwining the lives of the four protagonists. In the West, Adaira grapples with the harsh realities of life among the Breccans, questioning her place within the clan. As Bane’s power intensifies, the suffering of the spirits is a haunting backdrop to Adaira’s journey of self-discovery.

In the East, Jack embarks on a perilous mission fueled by his unique connection to the fire spirits. His path collides with Torin and Sidra as they search to find a cure for a spreading disease among the Tamerlaines. The author navigates these interconnected storylines with aplomb, building tension and intrigue that echoes the growing discord in the spirit realm.

As with A River Enchanted, the setting of A Fire Endless is exquisitely rendered. From the very first paragraph, the lush atmosphere is a dynamic character in its own right. With its heather-cloaked hills and salty lochs, Cadence is an ethereal feast for the senses.

The characters — both familiar and newly introduced — are a masterfully composed ensemble. Each provides their own resonant chord of vulnerability and growth. Their emotional journeys form the beating heart of the story, speaking to the true essence of humanity.

With her indelible prose, Ross paints a vivid canvas of emotions that dances right off the page. Her writing is as lyrical as the melodies played on Jack’s harp, bringing a powerful message of hope and healing to life.

Although fantasy elements are present, at its core, A Fire Endless is an exploration of the human spirit, placing emotions and relationships at the forefront. For those seeking an atmospheric and character-driven fantasy, this slow-burning symphony is a treasure to be savored.

Sexual content involves references to physical intimacy between married couples, a scene where a man is nude in a wooded area, a man flirting with a married woman, and four open-door sex scenes between consenting, married adults (these scenes contain more descriptive elements than in the first book, but still prioritize emotional aspects over the physical act itself). Violence encompasses incidents such as drowning, the presence of dead bodies, murder, graphic depictions of gore, death (including that of children), physical assault, a mention of a human skeleton hanging on a wall, poisoning (including self-administered cases), stabbing, executions, self-harm (related to blood magic), and a woman’s arm being cut, requiring stitches.
