To inherit billions, all Avery Grambs has to do is survive a few more weeks living in Hawthorne House. But with financial pressures building and the paparazzi dogging her every step, danger has become a fact of life. Further trouble arrives in the form a visitor who needs her help — a visitor whose presence in Hawthorne House could change everything.

Turns out, there is one more puzzle to solve surrounding the Hawethorne family. Despite the danger, Avery and the Hawthorne brothers are drawn into another game — this time against an unknown and powerful player.

Jennifer Lynn Barnes writes some of the best addictive YA mysteries I’ve come across and that is no exception with The Final Gambit, the last book in the Inheritance Games trilogy.

While I found parts of the story to be a tad underwhelming for a grand finale, Barnes still delivers her classic crazy twists that make it hard to put the book down. Fans of the series will certainly be satisfied by the ending… and the promise of a spinoff.

Rated: Moderate, for around 37 uses of mild language, 9 uses of moderate language, and a handful of uses of the name of Deity in vain. Avery’s best friend frequently uses substitute words in the place of stronger language (though it’s clear what she’s not saying). Violence includes death, murder, and hidden crimes. Characters suffer from emotional family abuse. Sexual content includes secrets of infidelity, characters frequently share a bed and wake up together, insinuation of another couple “sleeping together,” a nonsexual scene with a girl in a glass-doored shower while a boy waits on the other side, rumors of a incident between a girl and her teacher, reference to a girl being physically harassed, and the story of a man seducing and impregnating a teen girl. Characters kiss. Brief mention is made of a horoscope and card reading.
