Queen Levana from the Lunar Chronicles has her own story told in this novella showing a glimpse of who Levana was before she became the evil Lunar queen.

Because, once upon a time, she was just a girl — a girl haunted by villains and scars of her own who fancied herself in love with a kind guard.

I don’t enjoy reading villain arcs, and this story hasn’t changed anything for me. Levana begins her tale as a tormented, emotionally scarred teen looking for love and acceptance. Over time, we watch her slowly transform, becoming the very person she once hated and showing that even villains were once humans in need.

Rated: Moderate, for some harshness as a topic, emotional and physical abuse, some gory descriptions of burns, and magical manipulation that is evasive and borders on molestation. There are many sexual references and open talk of bedding men as if it were a game. Characters have sex but the details are glossed over.
