Azalea’s first Christmas Eve ball is a wonderful affair full of beautiful gowns, dashing suitors, and elaborate dancing — until it’s abruptly cut short on the order of her father, the king. Her mother has passed away, and suddenly everything that brought joy and happiness is taken away. But despite the year of mandatory mourning, Azalea and her sisters cannot keep themselves from dancing. They’d be punished if they were found in the act, but luckily, their castle hides more than just a troublesome magicked tea set. A hidden passage leads to a pavilion where a man named Keeper remains trapped in an ancient enchantment.
Every night, Azalea and her 11 sisters sneak away to Keeper’s silver forest to dance and remember their mother in secret, but Keeper would like something in exchange. If Azalea is not careful, she will find herself hopelessly entwined in an age-old curse destined to destroy her family.
Entwined is an adorable retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses, told in a magical way reminiscent of a Disney cartoon. While the story contains some dark, somewhat spooky, tones, I found it to be the perfect escape read full of strong family bonds, love, sacrifice, and a heart-melting ending.
Rated: Mild, for peril, bloodshed, and some dark tones.
