Isobel is a master of her Craft, creating stunning portraits for the dangerous fair folk. The fae are practically immortal and impossibly vain, yet they cannot create anything for themselves. Still, they crave human Craft more than anything — even going so far as to exchange valuable enchantments for Isobel’s paintings.
Isobel has been careful to make no mistakes in her interactions with them or her painstakingly worded dealings in enchantments, but when she receives her first royal patron — the autumn prince, Rook — Isobel makes a deadly mistake. She paints mortal sorrow in Rook’s eyes. Such a weakness could cost him his throne and his life.
Determined to right this wrong, Rook spirits Isobel away to his kingdom to stand trial for her crime, but something is amiss in the fae realms. Even before they reach the Autumn court, Isobel and Rook are attacked. While on the run, their tentative alliance turns to trust, and then love, but love is a forbidden emotion between humans and fae. According to the fair folks’ laws, their lives are forfeit, but Isobel holds more power than she realizes — in her craft, and in her love for Rook — and she’s not going to give up without a fight.
An Enchantment of Ravens features a vivid, atmospheric world full of danger and trickery, where beauty masks corruption and love overlooks appearances. This fantasy is definitely romance-heavy with a plot centered around Isobel and Rook’s forbidden feelings and their practically insta-love relationship. I’m not much of a romance-focused reader, so I found the first half of the book, where the characters seem to do nothing but walk through the woods bickering, to be a little boring, but I still appreciated the rich writing style with its touches of humor, magic, and mystery.
Rated: Moderate, for 6 uses of strong language, a few instances of mild language, and several uses of the name of Deity. Violence is a large part of the plot, including blood, death, injury, and fights with gruesome monsters. Sexual content includes an intense kissing scene that stops just before leading to more, as well as brief nudity after a character is turned back to their original form.
