In a mysterious town hidden in our collective subconscious there’s a department store that sells dreams. Day and night, visitors stream through its doors seeking to purchase their latest adventure. Looking for something specific? Each floor specializes in a certain type of dream. Looking for childhood memories? Food dreams? Something featuring a loved one who has passed away? Or perhaps dreams of stardom? It’s all here. Except, maybe, flying dreams, which are almost always sold out.

For Penny, working at DallerGut is her own dream come true. She’s still unsure of where she belongs, but as she uncovers the mysterious workings of the store, she finds herself bonding with unlikely new friends, from DallerGut (the flamboyant and wise owner) to Babynap Rockabye (a famous dream designer) and Maxim (a nightmare producer). Everyone comes to the DallerGut for their own reasons, but woven into each story is the same dream: to heal, to grow, and to flourish.

The DallerGut Dream Department Store is the kind of book that is all vibe, no plot. Its weird whimsy may be more reminiscent of a middle-grade story … but with adult characters facing adult problems. Honestly, that simplicity is part of what gives the story its charm. Admittedly, I wasn’t sure what to make of it at first, but in the end, I really enjoyed it for its episodic emotion-driven chapters. It’s a cozy tale that is creative and surprisingly insightful and will leave readers feeling good.

Overall, The DallerGut Dream Department Store is a captivating little story, perfect for readers who love quirky reads or are just exhausted from the reality of daily life.
