Zoe wakes up in Paris in the middle of the night with no memory. She doesn’t even know her real name. One thing she does know: people are trying to kill her.
Her only ally is a grumpy, tall, dark and handsome secret agent who has been trying to track down her identical twin sister … who apparently is a spy. He’s agreed to help Zoe disappear from the public eye, but getting away is easier said than done when a criminal organization wants you dead and every intelligence service in the world wants you caught.
No one is looking for a couple, though, and the only way to escape may just mean pretending to be lovesick newlyweds as they lie their way across Europe in a race to unravel a deadly conspiracy and clear her sister’s name.
I’ve been a big fan of Ally Carter’s writing since I picked up her young adult series The Gallagher Girls in high school, so, needless to say, The Blonde Identity was one of my most anticipated new releases of 2023. I was ready to dive back into a world of spies and secret agents, and while The Blonde Identity certainly is like an adult version of a Gallagher Girls story with its lighthearted banter and silly tone, I found it overall lacked heart and featured too much profanity, adult humor, and Harlequin-esque romance for my taste. Despite all my disappointments, though, this book is certainly still a laugh-out-loud, fast-paced, wild ride through Europe.
Rated: High. Profanity includes around 20 uses of strong language, 32 uses of moderate language, and 43 uses of mild language. Sexual content includes using sexual attraction, words like “erotic” and “humping” as casual descriptors, and innuendo in flippant remarks as methods of adding adult humor. Characters joke about honeymoon sex and later discuss the idea of intimacy before a tongue-in-cheek closed-door sex scene. Characters kiss, sometimes with tongue. Due to borrowed clothing, Zoe frequently finds herself scantily clad or wearing tight or revealing clothing. In one scene, she accidentally loses her nightie and is topless in front of a man. Violence includes general peril and some blood.
