Cooper could not really explain his nearly spiritual pull to the underground. As a young adult, he was always digging tunnels. His deepest and most elaborate tunnel caused a gas explosion in their suburban neighborhood in McLean, Virginia, and nearly killed Patrick, his younger brother and helper. The subsequent FBI investigation and disagreements with his enraged parents convinced Coop it was time to leave home and head to New York City. With his charismatic personality, Coop was soon invited to join a group living beneath the subway. He soon discover that his destiny was to go even deeper — to the Deep, in pursuit of a girl he had fallen in love with, Kate, the granddaughter of LOD (Lord Of the Deep).

Narrated in the voice of Pat(rick), Beneath is an engrossing book with multiple layers of interesting plots. Although clearly written with the young adult in mind, it is a book adults will enjoy reading. The main plot is near-real, bearing in mind the real-world Weather Underground Organization activities of the 1970s and what could have been if a breakaway cell of the organization went deep underground.

Roland Smith is an amazing storyteller and Beneath is one of my favorites of his books. This book contains no offensive content. And yet, it is completely entertaining. The sequel, Above, is a worthy follow-up.

Rated: None. No violence, profanity or sexual scenes.
