And we’re back in Marlow with the ladies of the Marlow Murder Club. The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts picks up the morning after the conclusion of the previous book, Murder on the Marlow Belle. Judith, Becks, and Suzie are excited about having dramatically revealed the killer during a play. Suzie in particular is eager to see coverage on the morning news.
But right away, other things take precedence: a new murder, and someone from Judith’s far-distant past showing up.
Then another murder: it seems someone is going after local celebrities. And this time around the three sleuths don’t have the in with the police they have managed to cultivate, either: DI Malik is suspended. With Judith dealing with something mysterious from her past, this case may be a bit tougher to investigate and solve.
I have to say I was most interested in reading this book because it’s been made very clear all through the series that Judith has a big secret (or secrets). And now I got to find out what she’s been hiding. It was satisfying for that to be addressed.
Otherwise, though, I didn’t quite get into this book as maybe I did the past two. Rather than giving it 4 stars I’d say just 3 to 3.5. It felt kind of phoned-in. I’ll still read any more that come along, though.
Rated: Mild. Profanity includes about 4 instances of moderate profanity, about 20 uses of mild language, 20 instances of the name of Deity in vain, and 15 uses of British profanity (bl-). There are multiple references to affairs. Violence is mild, with a few killings occurring but no details with blood, etc. There are a couple of brief references to domestic abuse.
