Nate Bargatze makes me laugh. Guaranteed. I’ve enjoyed his stand-up clips, and the two times he’s guest-hosted on Saturday Night Live have been hilarious. And I have no problem listening to/watching him because his content is clean. When I saw he had a book out, I thought, easy decision: read it. And then I remembered, Oh, yeah, I have Spotify Premium and I should download audiobooks on there more often! (Gotta get my money’s worth, ya know?) I would highly recommend listening to this book rather than just reading it in print or on Kindle because I can’t imagine not hearing his voice.
That being said, this format is not ideal for him. He’s tied to having to read exact wording, and that takes away one of his gifts: great timing. So while Big Dumb Eyes is fun, it’s not as laugh-out-loud funny throughout as his stand-up.
In the book, he jumps around throughout his life — childhood, young adulthood, more recent — in his topics. He tells stories about his parents, his siblings, his wife and daughter, his jobs, etc. Pretty standard. Mini-chapters also focus on his favorite foods.
If you’re already a fan of Nate Bargatze, you’ll enjoy the book. If you’re not familiar with him, start with his stand-up.
Big Dumb Eyes isn’t a laugh every minute, but it was good clean entertainment as I made some long road trips recently.
Rated: None. He’s known as a clean comedian, so there’s nothing not family friendly in this book, either.
