The sun is losing some of its power. This, of course, is a huge problem because if it continues, life on earth would end. Scientists like Ryland Grace are racing to find what is killing it. In this novel by Andy Weir (the author of the popular and turned-into-film The Martian), not only do human characters crackle with life, so do the extraterrestrial microbes … and something quite a bit bigger from another planet. In the book, one problem after another occurs: earth-borne problems, space-borne problems, internal problems, and everything problematic piled on top like toppings on an ice cream cone.

As a reader, I want to know whether the author has done his research so I can relax. I also want enough scientific detail to move the story forward, and no more. Andy Weir is gifted at both. The science in Project Hail Mary is believable enough that I can get lost for a good long time.

I have gone back for second and third helpings of Project Hail Mary. Bravo. The next science-based book Weir writes, I will be reading with relish.

Rated: Moderate. Profanity includes 4 uses of strong language, 15 uses of moderate language, about 10 uses of mild language, and 30 instances of the name of Deity used in vain. Sexual content includes a few instances of talk by secondary characters about it occurring, but no details.
