When a preteen delivers a note to Hannah from her husband of a year, she is confused, to say the least. He could have just called. But the note only says “Protect her.”
This is before she realizes he has disappeared. Hours later, news will break of the raid on the company Owen works for. The CEO of The Shop, with whom Owen works closely, is in FBI custody and will be charged with fraud. And Owen is simply gone.
Hannah doesn’t understand why he would have taken off. He must be innocent; he can fight the charge, if he is charged. He’s a good man. But she knows at least that the note means he wants her to protect his 16-year-old daughter, Bailey, whose mother died when she was little. From what, though?
After a visit from a U.S. marshal based in Texas and a pair of FBI agents, Hannah begins to realize her husband has been keeping secrets. He’s not who he says he is. And Bailey is the key to figuring out the truth.
Several clues lead her to believe the answers lie in Texas, so Hannah takes Bailey there. Bailey has never warmed to her new stepmother, so this time together is fraught. But together they begin to piece together one bit of information at a time to find out who father and daughter are and why Owen had to run. Unfortunately, as Hannah and Bailey both draw a little closer to each other and find out the truth about the past, Hannah realizes that the future may be one she hadn’t planned on.
The Last Thing He Told Me is a compelling suspense book, with elements of mystery. A woman who lives a fairly typical life suddenly has to navigate unusual circumstances and places and deal with some dangerous people. But she does so with strength and calm because she is motivated by protecting her someone she loves, someone who is innocent and who is depending on her. The answers aren’t easy but the story comes together well and feels right.
Rated: Moderate. Profanity includes 6 uses of strong language, a few instances of moderate profanity, 10 uses of mild language, and a few instances of the name of Deity in vain. There are instances of potential danger and references to violence and bad things done by some bad people. There is minimal sexual content.
