Aprilynne Pike’s debut novel, Wings, is an enjoyable read that will capture readers’ hearts. Wings follows teenager Laurel, who is starting her first day of high school in a new town. Laurel has lived the typical normal life until one morning she wakes up and discovers there is a flower blooming on her back.

From this moment on, Laurel learns that she isn’t normal — she isn’t even human. As Laurel struggles to come to grips with who or what she is, an undeniable danger surrounds her and her family. Aided by the calm, loyal, adorable David and the mysterious, alluring, charismatic faerie Tamani, Laurel must race to save her family from the enemies conspiring against them. Both are clearly interested in Laurel, and Laurel can’t help but feel attracted to both. How’s a girl to choose?

A beautiful and compelling story about love, friendship, and growing up that will catch the attention of readers, this engaging tale offers intrigue, danger, romance and, of course, a paranormal atmosphere that readers will love. Pike offers a fresh and inviting look at faeries and the popular paranormal genre that is refreshingly enjoyable.

Pike’s characters are quirky and beautifully portrayed, the plot masterfully crafted, and the overall writing compelling and intriguing. It’s not hard to see why this novel has caught the attention of readers across the globe.

Rated: Mild. This novel doesn’t use any profanities. It does mention sex a few times, but only in very light manner. It’s not explicit or descriptive. The references are very mild. The characters do not have sex in the novel. Overall, this novel is a very clean read.
