After the relic master Galen accomplishes what he set out to do in The Dark City, he looks toward doing what he can to restore the Order in preparation for the return of the Makers to the planet Anara. In the meantime, he discovers that the old Emperor had a child, who is hidden somewhere. If he and his apprentice, Raffi, can find the child, that heir to the throne could help them in restoring the old ways of doing things and rid the planet of the evil Watch.

The pair still have the help of the Sekoi with whom they traveled in the first book, and they end up getting some unexpected assistance from their friend Carys, the spy from the Watch. As they search for the heir to the throne, they find that, of course, rescuing her is even more challenging than they had expected.

Along the way, readers get a few more clues about the history of Anara and the Makers. The power of the relics and of the relic masters is intriguing, and one wants to know how these relics arrived in Anara and why the Makers abandoned the planet. I hope that the last two books (The Hidden Coronet and The Margrave) satisfactorily answer these questions and tie up the series nicely. We will see.
