Rated Reads

The Calder Game

by Blue Balliett

Rated: None

Calder Pillay is once again the star of a fun mystery for young readers in Blue Balliett’s The Calder Game. This time, he doesn’t just try to put clues together to solve a mystery – he IS the mystery. His friends, Petra and Tommy, must use their own particular talents as well as think like their friend to be able to solve the mystery of Calder’s disappearance.

And the young hero isn’t the only thing that disappears in the book. A statue created by mobile artist Alexander Calder also disappears.

Just as she does in Chasing Vermeer, Balliett weaves together elements of math, art, and creative thinking in a clever mystery for young people. She succeeds just as brilliantly as she does with her earlier work – her story and all its neat elements are terrific fodder for clever, curious young minds.

Rated: None. The only elements that could cause any concern at all are one use of the Lord’s name in vain and some references to “naked bottoms” on sculptures in public gardens.
