This is the second book in the Ruby Oliver series, which started with The Boyfriend List. Here Ruby is 16 and starting her junior year. She’s still a “leper” in the Tate Universe (the small private school she attends on scholarship), but at least she has a few people who will talk to her after the debacle of sophomore year.

Each chapter’s title deals with what she and her (mostly former) friends have learned as they interact with and date the opposite sex.  Then the chapters go on to describe her junior year, taking on a new hobby (working at the zoo), figuring out who she is (briefly stopping appointments with her shrink and then starting up again) and working on being a better person and friend.

Rated: High. The book includes more than a dozen swear words, about a handful of those the f-word. Ruby is now 16 but allows and discusses some moderate sexual encounters, mainly in a sense of letting boys get to second base or beyond but not necessarily having sex.
