Will Scarlet is Robin Hood’s right-hand man and informant. Will knows all the secrets and even has one of his (well, her) own. She is a she. This clever twist on the Robin Hood story includes the whole gang: Friar Tuck, Little John, Maid Marian, Will Scarlet and, of course, Rob, a.k.a Robin Hood. The outlaws rummage through Sherwood Forest robbing the rich to help the people of Nottingham as the corrupt sheriff and Gisbourne close in on them.

Will Scarlet is a lovable character and the writing endears all of the characters to you. Its mixture of action, romance and drama is just right. Scarlet is A.C. Gaughen’s first book and made me excited for her to write more.

Rated: Moderate (for YA readers; it would be more like a mild in adult terms). There are two instances of the b-word and a little other mild swearing. There is, of course, sword fighting, rebellion and violence, which would be expected in a Robin Hood story, which is part of the adventure and not morbid at all.
