Dispirited

by Luisa M. Perkins

Rated: Mild

Cathy sees things that no one else can. Her new stepbrother’s strange behavior, the ghost of a little boy and a gorgeous house in the woods. She soon discovers the boy is actually the rightful owner of the body of her stepbrother. Several years ago, he slipped from his body and another individual immediately took his place.

Now Cathy must find a way to rid the body of its evil inhabitor and put the rightful spirit back, but she’s up against forces she doesn’t understand and time is running out.

This young adult dark fantasy has everything I love: ghosts, old houses, magic, romance and good fighting evil. The premise feels so unique and is incredibly intriguing. Author Luisa M. Perkins takes a few basics of ghost stories and turns them on their head to create a fast-paced, fascinating, magical read. And with wonderful characters and a sweet first-love story, it’s a must-read.

I loved the magic of the old house — it’s so imaginative; and Perkins’ beautiful, clean writing brought it vividly to life in my head. Cathy is a wonderful heroine and I really appreciated the source of her powers. Oh, and the bad guy — devious and frightening.

A very highly recommended read, both for teens, adults and all who love a well-spun ghost tale.

Rated: Mild. A few mentions of the bad guy, who inhabits the body of a teen boy, using hard drugs and looking at porn on his computer — no descriptive details. A little bit of violence and one sweet, romantic kissing scene.
