I’m a sucker for a good fantasy: a kicking hero[ine], a bit of romance, some action, a splash of magic… it’s one of the things that will offer a fun escape to a stressful life. And Aurelia fits the bill perfectly: the title character is a feisty, yet conflicted, heroine, who in the end finds direction and kicks some major butt. There’s great sword-fighting, awesome horse-racing, and it’s all mostly well-written and intense. The romance is utterly swoon-worthy, with a bit of cluelessness and a dash of unrequited love just to make things interesting. There’s mystery and intrigue and suspense, as the main thread of the story surrounds the investigation into the plot to assassinate Aurelia. Who wants her dead? I found myself biting my nails, intent on figuring out who was behind the plan. There were enough hints and clues and misdirections to keep me turning pages.

But, most of all, it was the perfect fantasy: fun, fluffy and just right for that quick escape into another world.

Rated: Mild, for a bit of intense violence.
